Harry Manx
Fri Feb 10
Friday, February 10 at 8pm
Harry Manx speaks to the soul with his calm spirituality and distinctive sound. Dubbed the essential link between the music of East and West, he is a master of the musical short story that seamlessly weds the tradition of the 'earthly' American Blues with the depth of classical 'heavenly' Indian ragas. From an early age, Manx was on the road ... as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto, busking on street corners from Brazil to Japan, studying meditation and music in India ... and all these influences shine through in his music. A dedicated performer, Manx has put out nine CDs in eight years, garnered a serious stack of awards and toured extensively across Canada, the US, Australia and Europe, playing in soft seat theatres, prestigious festivals and first-rate blues clubs. A modern day troubadour, Manx sings with an intimate, quiet warmth that makes his shows mesmerizing. The subtle interplay between the haunting notes of the sitar and the gentle, rhythmic groove of the blues gives his songs a beautiful sensuality that defies comparison.
"Watching Harry play tonight I feel like I learned something new..." - Bruce Springsteen (after seeing Harry perform "I'm On Fire" at the International Guitar Festival in NYC)

Benefit Concert for Free The Children
Fri Feb 24
Friday, February 24 at 7pm
This concert features some of the best young entertainment that Lindsay has to offer, all coming together to raise money for a great cause! You will hear a wide variety of music… from jazz, to pop, to rock, to music theatre, to country… there is sure to be something for everyone! Come out and enjoy a great evening of music, while supporting the Free The Children organization.
Free The Children believes in a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. We are a charity and educational partner that empowers youth to remove barriers that prevent them from being active local and global citizens. Our domestic programs educate, engage and empower hundreds of thousands of youth in North America and the UK. Our international projects, led by our holistic and sustainable Adopt a Village model, has brought over 650 schools and school rooms to youth and provided clean water, health care and sanitation to one million people around the world, freeing children and their families from the cycle of poverty.
The Odyssey Project is a community-based music program for young people, that teaches musical skills through the performance of popular music. Each year we audition interested students from four area high schools and select around twenty young people to form a performance ensemble that will develop their skills over the next ten months. Each year's work culminates in a series of performances including our full-out Odyssey Project Live at the Academy Theatre show and a performance tour of central Ontario.
Started six years ago, our program has already earned a reputation for giving young musicians the space and guidance they require to develop into confident skilled performers. Clinicians, adjudicators and industry professionals that visit our program consistently comment on both the quality of the group's performance and the level of professionalism shown by the ensemble.
CIPA (Collaborative Initiatives in the Performing Arts) is a totally new and unique way of providing our students with greater performance opportunities in music and drama. CIPA is the creation of a group of like-minded Arts teachers from LCVI and IEWSS. We believe that by bringing students from these two performing arts programs together, we are better able to provide worthwhile, quality performing experiences to the students of both schools in this time of declining enrolment. The three combined music ensembles being offered this year (Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble and Concert Choir) represent the next step in the evolution of an idea that began two years ago with the first LCVI/IEW Mass Concert Band.

The Stampeders
Sun Mar 25
Sunday, March 25 at 8pm
They're on their way, to the city lights' ... and, THE predominant Canadian Rock 'n' Roll band of the 1970s are bringing along all their classic hits: Wild Eyes, Carry Me, Oh My Lady, Devil You, Monday Morning Choo Choo, Minstrel Gypsy, Hit the Road Jack and, of course, the quintessential Canadian – and Hall of Fame – song, Sweet City Woman. A veritable soundtrack to a whole generation that will 'carry you home ' ... maybe not to Birmingham ... but back to a time of tie-dyed shirts and elevator shoes, 15¢ coffee and homemade apple pie, dating and dreaming ... By the time The Stampeders get to the first chorus of the first song, everyone will be singing along. 'So you better catch a noon train, better get there for a rock 'n' rolling good time!

Terri Clark
Fri Mar 30
Friday, March 30 at 8pm
Canadian Country Superstar TERRI CLARK will perform at the Academy Theatre with a special guest!
Two years ago, the big story was that Terri Clark had done the unthinkable and came home.
After years of being one of the biggest names in country music globally, Terri announced that she was going to focus her attention on Canada. Yearning for change, she vowed to do things "her way". What fans got in return was what she called the most "personal" record of her career.
“The new album is just as personal. I didn’t think I had it in me to dig that deep again and get that personal. It’s personal in a lighter way.”
We’ll save all the stats for your googling pleasure. To the casual fan, Terri Clark is a staple when it comes to listing off female country artists they’ve heard of. For the rest of us, beyond the millions of albums sold and an innumerable amount of awards and recognition lies a resilient, real talent who reminds us that life truly is an adventure. For every solemn moment, there is also celebration.
Now, with a new outlook and her hat back on, Clark continues her personal journey with an inspiring combination of emotion and shameless joy in her newest release, "Roots and Wings".
“I chose "Roots and Wings" after much deliberation about naming the album after one of the song titles, which felt a little cliché. I felt not just ONE song encompassed what the album meant for me.”
This is typically the part where you’ll get sold on what’s the hot single, but the fact is that every song on “Roots and Wings” will make you feel something different. Kicking off with the empowering anthem “Wrecking Ball” and wrapping up with the heartbreaking “Flowers in Snow”, Clark’s honesty and passion shine through.
“I’m embracing my roots, who I am, my old friends and family, and coming full circle in my life… choosing some songs with those themes for this album.” If there was any indication of Terri’s love for her homeland, it’s captured in the lead-off single, “Northern Girl”.
Terri also takes us on a trip back in time, cutting a song she initially wrote at just 22 years of age. With “Lonesome’s Last Call”, Clark brings back a classic “hurtin’ song” feel. “It has that classic old school country vibe that I grew up listening to, and reminds me so much of my Grandparents who used to sing all the classics.”
Sticking to her northern “Roots”, Terri turns up the fun with what’s certain to be the rebirth of a vintage Canadian party starter, Trooper’s “We’re Here For A Good Time”.
While some would be quick to scrutinize a cover, Clark was the first to realize how big of a song she was taking on. “It’s so funny because my manager’s from Kentucky and he totally doesn’t get it. I tell him “you didn’t grow up in Canada hearing this like every 5 minutes on the radio!”
“It’s not a Shakespearian lyric, it’s very simple. I just had to find a way to make it my own. I had to do something completely different in order to feel like I was doing it justice.” Clark lets loose and catches the essence of the song, paying tribute while also making it feel fresh and exciting.
The “Wings” spawn from Terri’s desire to rise from the ashes of a tumultuous few years.
In the time between albums, she shared much of her experiences during her Mother’s battle with cancer. Those who never met Linda felt like they knew her based merely on the stories Terri would tell about her. With some help from the iconic Alison Krauss, Terri shares with us the closeness with her mother, in the form of “Smile”. “The song is about how she was always willing to "let me go" so that I could live up to my fullest potential, and really fly...no matter how hard it was at the time, because we were always so extremely close.” To even the most distant stranger, this sweet homage brings with it the love between mother and daughter in the simplest form.”
“I lost my best friend, my Mom, to cancer last year, and ended a long term relationship not long after that. It was all very tough, but I also feel like that is when our spirits and minds grow the most, and creatively I feel like it all inspired me to write some songs that I otherwise may not have.”
In “The Good Was Great” Clark mirrors the changes in her own experiences – choosing to focus on the positive. “It’s about taking the good parts of a relationship and the sweetness it brought to your life instead of constantly focusing on the bad parts and reasons why it didn't work out.”
Like life, relationships play a big part in “Roots and Wings”. Terri offers some fresh perspectives with songs like “Beautiful and Broken,” “Breakin’ Up Thing” and “The One” – Three very different songs that range from unconditional love to being true to one’s own needs in life.
To this day, there is no other artist like Terri Clark. In the seemingly endless debate of “what’s country”, nobody will argue that Terri remains one of the most influential performers of our time. Even with all her success, you won’t hear her brag about it. “I love letting people know and see that I am just an every day girl, with a not so every day job, but I don't feel a "disconnect" with my audience just because I am on the stage...I feel like we are all there to have a great time, myself included, and usually, that is what happens.”
While we all face challenges in our lives, few are able to transform them into the kind of messages Clark shares in “Roots and Wings”. “I’ve been learning to be me again. To be the person I was before my Mom got sick. I’m learning how to have fun and lighten up and roll the windows down and hang out with friends and laugh out loud and be a goof ball.
I’m really enjoying life and being happy again. That’s coming out on the record. There’s some pretty fun stuff on here that I’m feeling is emerging that hasn’t in the past few years.”
Terri Clark’s ability to reinvent herself while returning to the sound that first brought her to us once again demonstrates the versatility of this one-of-a-kind entertainer.
To be more concise, “She's still got it.”
“Roots and Wings” is available in stores and online on July 26, 2011. For more information on the release, visit www.terriclark.com

Tales From the Street - Coronation Street
Sun Apr 1
ON STAGE – IN PERSON
MUCH ADO ABOUT CORONATION STREET…
Four cast-members of the legendary British TV series, CORONATION STREET, will be at Lindsay’s Academy Theatre in TALES FROM THE STREET, Sunday April 1 at 2:00 PM.
Audience members will see these familiar faces of Britain's longest running soap, spilling the secrets and gossip about their characters, the behind the scenes antics, and their lives on and off the small screen. A special segment of the show will allow audience members to ask their questions about the residents of England's most famous street.
And, a lucky 100 admirers will get a chance to purchase tickets for apre-show meet-and-greet reception with the former Coronation Street actors, followed by prime front seats for the main event.
Coronation Street's bigger than ever!
Coronation Street began due to a government mandate for home-grown television programming. A Canadian producer at Granada, the late Harry Elton, knew the popularity and longevity of American soaps and their production cost-effectiveness. He met a young writer at Granada, Tony Warren, who knew the stories and people of England’s North. Neither of them imagined their show would become part of the very fabric of the country. But it has.
Since it first broadcast on December 9,1960, it's been one of the most financially lucrative programs on commercial television and the world's longest-running TV drama serial currently in production. Over the years, it's covered a number of storylines that have created dispute, debate and public outcry. However, it’s most often noted for its mixture of drama and comedy and for its emphasis on character driven storylines. Despite the passage of over fifty years, together with changing characters, competition from other soaps and the evolution of the genre, Coronation Street has remained popular and still tops the ratings.
Appearing in this once-in-a-lifetime presentation for Corrie fans are four former regulars from the hit show…
Ken Morley is best known for his role as Reg Holdsworth (1989-1995). This outlandish, annoying and womanizing supermarket manager was the character viewers loved to hate, with his oversized glasses becoming something of a trademark. In one of his more memorable scenes, Reg, true to his unfaithful nature, bursts a waterbed with its contents deposited to the shop below.
“Reg was an iconic character. He was part of that great 1980s surge, when all those huge supermarkets were built and consumerism went wild,” Morley says. “And I remember post-war severity, living through that - the other end of the scale to the spending to capacity we have today. Holdsworth is part of that. It was a satire of that type of middle management who see themselves on the cutting edge of business, who are now paying the price through their gluttony – making sure everyone can have avocados all year round and all that - and are now facing years of austerity.” "They need characters like Reg again”, Morley reiterates. "The executive producer Kieran Roberts asked me: 'Would you ever consider coming back?' I told him I'd come back as a scourge questioning the morals, the views and the thinking of younger people.”
Steven Arnold as Ashley Peacock made his debut in 1996 as Fred
Elliott’s nephew, although it was later discovered that Fred was actually his biological father. The list of Ashley-based storylines were endless…raising a child who turned out was fathered by someone else, losing his wife to murder, supporting his second wife (Claire Peacock) through postpartum depression, a devastating house fire started by his mistress, a (reluctant) vasectomy and, of course, his tragic death in the infamous Coronation Street tram crash.
In a 2010 interview with The News Of The World about his all-time favorite actor on the show, Steve added: "That's John Savident who played butcher and biological father Fred Elliott. He didn't just help me, he helped all the younger members of cast. He was brilliant, a generous actor who was fantastic to work with. Fred was my favorite character too, he had a wonderful charm about him." But Steve was glad his Ashlely Peacock character was killed off. “To be honest I felt ready to go…I loved my time at Corrie. I cried when I left because it means so much to me, but it was time for Ashley to go.”
Julia Haworth played Claire Peacock (2003-2011), initially intended to be Corrie’s answer to Mary Poppins. She arrived on The Street as a nanny to Joshua Peacock, after his mother is murdered. A romance develops between Claire and Joshua's father Ashley, and they finally marry on Christmas Day 2004. Her storyline, initially intended to include a child abduction plot, was re-developed but still criticized for being a vehicle encouraging social action/volunteer work benefiting Mental Health and 'Women In Crisis' issues. Due to these controversies, the Peacock family was cut from the storyline, with Claire making her last appearance on January 14, 2011, after tricking police and escaping to France for a life as a fugitive.
Actress Julia Haworth has called Claire a ‘a one-man girl’”. "I truly believe with Claire and Ashley that what doesn't kill them only makes them stronger. I really do think that they're a solid couple and they can get through whatever life throws at them. They're probably the only couple in the Street I can say that about."
Nicholas Cochrane debuted (1989) in Coronation Street at the age of fifteen as Andy McDonald, one of the teenage twins. Studious and conscientious, he was very different from his brother Steve, although he did get into several scrapes. He was the brains of his family, but had a lot of trouble dealing with the stress within it. Andy goes to university but drops out because of a girlfriend with whom he shortly after splits up. He works at the supermarket as a trainee manager for a while, but eventually moves to Spain, where he remains as a teacher of English. He has made occasional returns to the Street when the script demanded… reappearing to attend his mother and father's remarriage in 2000, stopping off long enough to have a short fling with local 'hipster' Toyah Battersby. He also returned to be best man at his brother's second marriage in 2004.
Regarding speaking events like TALES FROM THE STREET, Nick remarks that “it seems to be something that’s to the liking of the huge following of soap fans. It gives some of us the opportunity to have our say on things. It will be a good, lively show. The audience will be given the opportunity to ask some questions too.” Any apprehensions about that? “If there’s any questions that are a bit freaky, it depends how freaky I suppose. But I am open to any questions really, I don’t think anyone has got any regrets so...”
Ken Morley sums up the show’s 50th-anniversary… “It’s such a huge event, a show lasting 50 years, several times a week, nobody has ever done it before. And it’s not just in this country, it’s international.”
Tickets are available at the Academy Theatre Box Office, 705 324 9111 or toll free 877 888 0038. You can also visit the Academy Theatre web site at www.academytheatre.ca
